CELEBRATING 60 YEARS             OF SHORINJI KEMPO
                  1947--2007
                                                        Doshin So (1911 - 1980)

The founder of SHORINJI KEMPO, Doshin So personally witnessed the harsh realities of WWII and,

out of a deep and abiding concern for the future of man and his mother country, resolved to develop

confidence in young people, giving them the courage and compassion to care about others and serve

society as a whole.

He believed that carefully organized, an educational system providing appropriate teaching were

necessary to develop human potential. So he developed a set of techniques that anyone could learn

regardless of gender or individual physical strengths based on Chinese martial arts and other knowledge

he had mastered. He also took special care to insure that these techniques would be appealing to others

and effective in fostering confidence. He then developed a unique educational system that combined

these techniques and his founding philosophy of “Half for one’s own happiness, and half for the

happiness of others.” He named this system SHORINJI KEMPO.    Some describe it as the 'middle path'.

IN MEMORY OF DOSHIN SO, FOUNDER,
and MY SENSEI, and LOS ANGELES BRANCH MASTER MIHO TANYA YAMAMORI,
LOS ANGELES LOCATION: KONKO (CHURCH)  2924 E. 1st Street L.A., CA 90033

I  was lucky enough to actually meet Doshin So in the late 70's, before he finally passed on.  He made

an appearance at our Los Angeles DOJO, which we trained on hardwood flooring at the little white

church known as 'KONKO' by local residents of Boyle Heights.  I trained under Master Yamamori

for a few years in the late seventies from 77-80.  I sustained an injury from an attempted robbery (I had

gotten stabbed on the left wrist/forearm, losing much needed grip strength).  Unfortunately, I was unable to

continue my training at that time, due to the length of time it took to fully heal (my arm).  Once I was

fully recovered, I resided in the SF Valley, and chose to continue my training under Lynn Kobayashi

in Panorama City, CA.  This Art was not Shorinji Kempo, but I had my Japanese Instructor (I felt

better under Japanese Masters).  After another year, I realized my injury was not ever going to fully heal,

so I no longer trained in my passion: Martial Arts.  How did I end up in Martial Arts?  While living in El

Paso, TX in the 60's, my Dad and oldest brother pulled me aside one day and asked if I would like to

train in Karate.  Needless to say, I was all for it.  I was 11 or 12 at the time. I trained for about a year

until we moved to Northern New Mexico.  The school I attended had wrestling as an Intercollegiate

sport.  I am a pure athlete (have to be in some sport no matter what, whether in season or off season), so I

signed up.    I was a Varsity Wrestler in 9th Grade.  I wrestled 119, 126 & 132 weights.  I loved tacking on

the points, and prefered that over fast tap-outs.  You pin a guy's shoulders for even one second and the ref

can tap him out.  You end up winning the match.    I lost 1 match my whole wrestling career (my very last

match).    Training was intense; always wore a heavy sweat suit, worked out in a fairly small room with no

windows and two huge heaters blasting all the time.  There were times when I had to wrestle each wrestler,

one after the other, just to prepare for future matches.  Wrestling took place during the Winter months, and I

lived about 7 miles from school.  Well, I would attend school, then train 2 hours in wrestling, then walk in

the snow 7 miles just to get home.  Think I'm lying?  Think again.  I never gave it a thought.  I loved the

sport.

After high school I worked in the West Texas oil fields for a couple years, then moved back to California

to continue training in something.  Since the Konko was just around the corner from my Mother's house, and

she had introduced me to the sensei years before, I walked in one evening and told  Yamamori-san I wanted

him to train me.  The rest is history (actually the rest is what I had already written).  Since then, I've kept in

contact with Yamamori until December (2006), when Mr. Yamamori passed away.  This section of the

website is dedicated to the memory of both my sensei,

Yamamori,

and our Founder,

Doshin So.

Shorinji Kempo
by Richard Killion - Dragon Times #14

Establishment of Shorinji Kempo

In 1928, Doshin So, the founder (also refered to as Kaiso) travelled through China studying as he did so various forms of Chinese Kempo. Under the guidance of the head of the North Shorinji Giwamonken School of Kempo, Wen-Lanshi, he studied its techniques in great depth including the practice of embu, a kata-like form that requires two people to perform, and a hallmark of modern Shorinji Kempo. (Note that the word Shorinji is the Japanese pronounciation of Shaolin Temple Boxing.) In 1936, at a ceremony at the school, Doshin So became the official successor.

Experiencing the Russian Army's occupation of Manchuria, Kaiso concluded that the course of the world's events was not dependent on ideology, religion or nationalism, but on the quality of the individual person and of his or her actions. This conclusion strongly influenced the shaping of Shorinji Kempo and its philosophical base Returning to the devastation of postwar Japan he found the youth of his homeland discouraged, and with little if any sense of purpose. His great concern for their moral welfare and the future of his country caused him to devote his life to training young people with "courage, strength, mercy and a sense of justice," principles that in the fullness of time would find international acceptance.

He reformed and revised the martial art techniques that he had studied in China, and added to them his philosophical insights to create Shorinji Kempo. As both a training place and sanctorium he established the Shorinji Kempo honbu dojo on the Island of Shikoku, Kagawa Prefecture, in the town of Tadotsu. The original 12 square meter dojo behind his house in Tadotsu has grown over the years into a very substantial training facility, to where students from all over the world come to train.

Establishment in the USA

Rev. Yamamori Sensei:
In the 1950s Yamamori Sensei trained at the Kyoto Betsuin Dojo in Kyoto. Doshin So would come to Kyoto for two weeks each month to train Yamamori and his classmates. In 1968 Yamamori Sensei founded the first United States Shorinji Kempo dojo in Los Angeles, where he continues to teach today. Yamamori Sensei holds a 7th dan rank and is an ordained priest of Kongo-Zen.

Los Angeles Dojo:
Located in a large port city of the Pacific Rim, the Los Angeles dojo is comopolitan in outlook and attracts an international cross section of Shorinji Kempo students. Yamamori sensei is noted for his lectures as well as his teaching and both act as magnets for students travelling in America as well as visiting instructors from Japan, among them: Morikawa, Zeo Sensei; Arai Sensei; Misaki, Toshio Sensei; Goda, Kiyokazu Sensei; Yamazaki, Hiromichi Sensei; Miyoshi, Kenji Sensei; Kurata, Kenji Sensei; Akiyoshi, Yoshimi Sensei, and Bando, Kunio Sensei

Rev. Toshio Kuramoto Sensei:
In 1969, Kuramoto Sensei began studying Shorinji Kempo at the Koshigaya Doin in Koshigaya city in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. He had no previous martial arts training prior to joining Shorinji Kempo. He started training under Yamamori Sensei at the Los Angeles dojo in 1972. He holds a 6th dan rank and is an ordained priest of Kongo-Zen. He has recently established his own dojo in Hollywood, California.

Organization

The religious organization is called Sohonzan-Shorinji, and its sect is called Kongo Zen and is registered with the Japanese government. The martial art organization is officially called Shorinji Kempo Renmei.

There is also a world federation called the World Shorinji Kempo Organization WSKO - a federation of all Shorinji Kempo dojos around the world. Countries outside of Japan have national, and sometimes regional federations, where they periodically meet together as a group. The British Shorinji Kempo Federation, founded by Mizuno Sensei and Yoshida Sensei is a very active federation in Great Britain. Worldwide, there are about 1.4 million members at 3,000 dojos in 20 countries. In the United States, there are currently 27 dojos.

Philosophy of Kongo-Zen

The philosophy of Kongo-Zen comes from the word Kongo, which means diamond, and Zen, from the teachings of Boddharma, whose essential teaching was that the kingdom of heaven lies in the heart of man. Essentially, this is a belief of self-dependence, as can be seen in the Seiku (meditation). At the beginning of practice, the meditation, oath and creed are recited. At the Los Angeles dojo this is done in Japanese.

Meditation (Seiku)

I am my own refuge and source of strength. On whom may I rely if not myself? With a wisely disciplined self, I find a truly rare and precious fountain of strength. By doing evil, I contaminate myself. By not doing evil, I purify myself. Purity and impurity come from within, and others cannot purify my heart.

Oath (Seigan)

We pledge to follow the principles of Shorinji Kempo in practice and in daily life:

To affirm the founder.
To be honest with our teachers.
To respect those ahead of us.
To not disdain those behind us.
To give as well as receive help.
To cooperate, and to give ourselves to contributing to the Way.
We pledge to set aside our preoccupations in learning this art as if we were newborn children.
We pledge to use this art only to help people, never for our reputation or profit.

Creed (Shinjo)

Mindful that our spirit came from Dharma and our bodies from our parents, we acknowledge debts and express out gratitude by applying ourselves to the fullest.

We resolve ourselves to making the country worthy of love by improving the lives of its people.

We resolve to become men and women of true courage who love justice, foster peace, respect humanity, and act with decorum.

We strive to improve the world by practicing the principles of Kongo Zen, strengthening ourselves mentally and physically and sharing this purpose with others in mutual friendship, respect, and support.

The ultimate reality cannot be comprehended by human thought and Kongo-Zen does not recognize an invented reality that projects human's fears and needs. There is no need for humans to claim to be gods or profit from being intermediaries for gods. Praying to gods will not solve problems. Kongo-Zen states that problems are to be solved by man by acquiring more knowledge and becoming one with the spirit of Dharma.

There is the important Kongo-Zen concept of the Middle Path of Harmony. It states that extremes must be avoided. For an individual to recognize and attempt to solve the problems of the world it is necessary to have both a strong mind and a strong body. Ignoring one aspect would not make a completed human. Both the mental and the physical aspects of the world must be acknowledged and be in balance.

There also is a middle path relationship between the individual and society. There must be a middle path between selfishness and selflessness. Humans must realize their dependence on others, but preserve their individuality.

What is Shorinji Kempo

The spiritual teachings of Shorinji Kempo, are, of course, based on Kongo Zen principles.

It believes in balancing the spiritual aspects of the East with the material and scientific approach of the west.

There are four essential teachings of Shorinji Kempo, which will be briefly explained:

The Answer Lies in Man

The individual is responsible for his own welfare and happiness, and should not blame others and society for what befalls him. Training aims to produce responsible individuals who can relate to society in a meaningful and fruitful way.

The Unity of Ken and Zen

Ken refers to the body or action. Zen refers to the mind or composure. The mind and the body are inseparable. A troubled mind can lead to poor health, and, conversely, poor health can bring about a troubled mind. Both mind and body need to be cultivated for a complete individual.

The Unity of Strength and Love

The reality of life is that justice must be enforced by strength. Passive submission is not beneficial to anyone. Forgiveness, coming from love, must be supported by the power to punish. Shorinji Kempo uses strength for preservation of life, not for killing. Force is to be used as a final measure and only for the purpose of self -preservation.

Living Half for Oneself and Half for Others

Humans must think of the welfare of others as well as their own. One must not deprive others at the cost of the individual. While pursuing the benefits for oneself, one should also benefit others.

Manji

The symbol of Shorinji Kempo is an commonly seen Buddhist symbol of Indian origin, and great antiquity. In Japan it is used to denote a Buddhist temple, on maps and the symbol itself is displayed in and around the temples. The religious device is composed of four Ls at right angles to each other similar to, but not to be confused with the swastika used in Nazi Germany which is its mirror image. Another form of the Manji in Shorinji Kempo is two flowing lines within a circle, somewhat similar to a double yin-yang symbol. This modified symbol commonly used in Shorinji Kempo dojos in the West.

Techniques

The hard aspect of Shorinji Kempo techniques called Goho consists of thrusts, and kicks. The soft aspect, called Juho, consists of twists, throws, eluding (releases), and pinning. There are over 600 of these techniques as well as 142 points located in the body that can cause pain or fainting when pressure is applied.

Training consists of a mutually cooperative effort between two persons in an experimental manner by receiving and applying these techniques. An embu is a planned two-person form that reinforces reflexes, distance judgement and overall techniques. There are standard embus, and also partners can create their own embu. No floor mats are used during practice. Most dojos have wooden floors.

Students (referred to as kenshi) greet each other with a gassho, with the palms of the hands held together at eye level. When listening to instruction, they stand at attention with the hands clasped in front of the body.

Goho-The Positive System

Shorinji Kempo techniques use the coordinated power of the entire body, especially the hips and shoulders. This is especially emphasized in hand thrusts. During warm-up, there is one particular training exercise, where the body motion used in hand thrusts are practiced while keeping the hands behind the body. While practicing this, the shoulder, knee, hip and overall body position is carefully checked.

Hand thrusts are varied and can be closed or open handed. There is also an eye strike (Mae Uchi) where the arm is relaxed and is whipped so that the fingers flick at the eyes.

The stances are not deep enough to prevent mobility in any direction. There are various hand positions that students can further vary with open hands and closed fists. The basic Chudan Gamae stance using both fists is somewhat similar to a boxer's hand position, except the lead fist is lower.

The footwork taught allows for mobility in any direction. Turning, stepping, sliding and leaping movements are used. When moving into an opponent the approach is not straight in but to the side. Dodges are also practiced in order to avoid attacks and are frequently combuned with blocks which are performed "inwards" or "outwards." Kicks are immediately withdrawn into a position from which the leg itself can be used to block an opponent's kick and then counterattack with yet another kick. Ukemi (rolls) are practiced and culminate with a standing or kneeling defensive position from which further defensive and/or counter-attacking techniques are launched.

Juho-The Passive System

The coordination of the power of the body, especially the hips, shoulders legs and positioning of the arms contributes to the effectiveness of the techniques. Releasing (eluding) grabs of either the hands, wrists or clothing are practiced. This can result in the opponent releasing his grip or can develop into a throw that simultaneously causes pain in the gripping hand and arm before the opponent reaches the ground. Once on the ground pins are used to increase pain, if needed, and to contain the opponent. After control is established, a coup de grace in the form of a hand thrust or kick is delivered.

There are a large number of eluding and throwing techniques and variations due to the the differences in the opponent's grab, the relative height and strength of the opponent and his reaction to your defense. The finer points in making a Juho technique more effective are not obvious to a casual observer, or even a student, unless the technique is directly experienced. A subtle shift in relative positioning of the hands, elbows, arms, hips, shoulders can create an unexpected magnitude increase of pain or an increase of throwing force.

Seiho

Seiho is based on ancient methods used to regulate the body by application of pressure to various known points on the body. This relaxes the muscles and improves circulation. The most commonly used techniques are applying pressure to the muscles surrounding the spinal column and the neck muscles, as well as the pulling of the rib cage.

Zazen

Zazen meditation is employed to cultivate cultivate proper breathing, increase mental awareness and concentration. Zazen is based on the concept of the mind-body unity and is important for ensuring a balanced human being. Appo and Kappo.

Kappo literally means "resuscitation." These are collections of techniques to revive a person who is unconscious. There are seven technical maneuvers available (according to the Honbu Manual, demonstrated by Bando Sensei) by which Kappo can be used to revive an unconscious person. Appo literally means "the technical application of the pressure points," is the collections of tecniques, called O-atsu waza (or technique used to paralyze an opponent by applying the correct amount of pressure onto the correct pressure- points of the body).

Appo can be used by a kenshi to defeat the offender by applying the correct pressure, even without applying strong power. Therefore, even the young children or women can defend themselves if they perform this technique. The knowledge of these pressure points originated from the Oriental medical practices of some 5000 years ago.

Conclusion

True teaching can be thought of as continuation of a culture. What is taught are not just the facts that can be recorded in a book but the human-to-human transmission of a way of doing.

Diaz to Fight Noons on October 9th (Rematch)

Los Angeles, CA--August 24, 2010--Yes, it's time the bad boy of MMA, Strikeforce Welterweight Champion, Nick DIaz exacts his revenge against a man who won by doctor stoppage the last time these two met (Elite XC).  KJ Noons bloodied up Diaz so much so that the doctor had to be called in and his opinion caused the bout to be stopped, declaring Noons the victor.  Fast forward to October 9th, 2010: Diaz will finally get his opportunity to beat Noons, despite what others may think.

On an earlier event in Hawaii, when both fighters had fought and won their respective bouts, directly after Noons won his bout, Diaz was allowed to enter the cage, requesting a rematch with Noons.  Still basking in the glow, Noons asked the fans if they wanted to see a rematch, leading Diaz to tell Noons not to "be afraid homie".  This must have irked Noons' father, who also was in the cage, because he jumped at the Diaz brothers , causing quite a ruckus, leading to the Diaz corner being escorted from the cage.  There is bad blood between the Noons and Diaz families.

Noons won the Lightweight title on November 10, 2007, defended it on June 14, 2008 and on September 19, 2008, he lost the belt for his reluctance to fight Diaz in a rematch. The weight at the time (Elite XC) was 160 lbs.  Noons fights at lightweight and Diaz fights at Welterweight, so one wonders how this will pan out.

If the two side cannot agree to either a catch weight or Noons moving up in weight, then Jason Mayhem Miller might be the alternative to fight DIaz, since these two also have hostility toward eachother.  The issue here is Miller fights at 185, Diaz 170.  Diaz can move up in weight (two of his recent fights were at a catchweight of 180-182).  It appears Strikeforce needs to hire more bodies to fill in the space in these three weight categories.

Also on the card is Sarah Kaufman, defending her Welterweight Belt against Dutch Superstar, Marloes Coenen*. Coenen had lost in her bid to upset MIddleweight Champ Cristiane Cyborg Santos, although she stuck it out against a far superior female fighter.  Perhaps this weight might hold better results for Coenen, but Kaufman has to be stopped first and chances of that happening are fairly slim.  Coenen has a chance of doing just that.  Come October 9th at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA

UFC 117 Results
Los Angeles, CA--August 9, 2010--Here in LA, many watched the UFC 117 event in Oakland, CA by PPV.  Beginning with the lightweights, Clay Guida evidently injured Rafael dos Anjos' jaw in the first round, and we could see dos Anjos mentioning it to his cornermen after the round ended.  He continued despite the broken jaw, until the third round, when Guida had his shoulder pressed against dos Anjos' jaw, against the Octagon cage.  Dos Anjos tapped out by the severe pain he suffered.  Guida won by submission.

Ex-Welterweight champ, Matt Hughes faced Renzo Gracie student, Ricardo Almeida, because after watching Hughes dispatch Gracie in Abu Dhabi, Almeida immediately asked for the Hughes fight to avenge the loss Gracie and other Gracie student, Matt Serra.  Unfortunately for Almeida, Hughes cracked him in the head, knocking Almeida on his can, which Hughes immediately pounced on him, using an old wrestling move to choke Almeida into unconsciousness, ending the round.  Hughes wins in the first round.

In another 170 pound fight, Jon Fitch beat Thiago Alves one more time, only this time he managed to use up all three rounds to do it in.  ALves had no answer for Fitch's wrestling abilibies.  Fitch won by unanimous decision.

In the heavies Junior dos Santos beat Roy Nelson by unanimous decision, although he could not knock out his opponent like all his other opponents in the past.  Dos Santos claimed Nelson was very tough to beat, and his face showed the marks Nelson left on him.  Although Nelson did lose, he showed just how much he has inside of him and how difficult is may be to beat him as well.  Dos Santos wins by unanimous decision in three rounds.

In the Main Event, Chael Sonnen did exactly what he promised to do, with one exception; he got caught in the end.  Yes, Sonnen floored the champ, immediately jumping on him, using his notorious ground and pound, slamming hard to not-so-hard strikes to the champ's head, over and over.  The elbows landed many times as well.  For 4 and a half rounds, Sonnen did just what he promised to do and that was beat the sh*t out of Anderson Silva.  Unfortunately Sonnen does have a weak spot and that is he is susceptable to being submitted, only because he is not afraid to be on top of any opponent.  From Silva being on his back throughout the fight, he mustered a triangle choke, which referee Josh Rosenthal stopped the fight, while the fighters were still engaged in heavy fighting, due to an alleged tap.  Of course, Sonnen was in a precarious situation, but he did not start tapping out.  He waved his hand around and placed a light tap on Silva's knee, but that is not tapping out.  Silva won the fight by that unfortunate decision of the referee to stop the fight.
With just over a minute left in the one sided battle, Sonnen lost his opportunity to beat the one-time unbeatable champion in the Middleweight division, leaving the world to see Silva is not invincible, although many fans will claim Sonnen tapped, only because of the bias in Silva's aura.  Anyone with eyes and a brain will see Sonnen was not TAPPING OUT.  Silva is still on schedule to fight Vitor Belfort, but who knows what will happen now, after almost getting it handed to him by Sonnen.  Immediate Rematch?  Not in Dana White's book.  Anyone else, and perhaps yes, but not Sonnen.  No, White will not give Sonnen the opportunity to one more chance, even though he knows Sonnen was winning handily this bout against Anderson Silva.  Rua got his rematch with Machida, BJ Penn is getting his rematch with Frankie Edgar, but Sonnen will not be so fortunate, because the world knows if anyone can knock Silva off his roost, it's Sonnen.  For obvious reasons, they do not want this to happen.

Daley's Apology Comes Too Late

Los Angeles, CA--May10, 2010--OK, so Paul Daley was frustrated. Any man would be frustrated, knowing his opponent is besting him and there was nothing Daley was able to do about it. Same with anyone else; frustration sets in and they've got to get something in (Daley used his sucker punch as his way to "get something in"). Unfortunately, this was not the way. You simply suck it up and hope for a better day. The loss dropped him down a few rungs. The sucker punch may have cost him a lucrative career.
I say if Dana White can let Jesse Taylor back in and allow Junie Browning to continue fighting in the UFC, why not allow Paul Daley back? He will apologize on Network TV if need be. This man is a fighter who wins fights. Losing to someone who is taunting along the way got to him. If he can prove to White and the fans that this type of behavior will never happen again and if Josh Koscheck approves of Daley's re-entry, then I say: "Why not?" Koscheck should have a say in this since he was the victim here.
                                   (Paul Daley)

What I do not approve is Daley using reasons and excuses in his apology statement. There is no need to explain why he did what he did, because the fact that he did sucker punch an opponent is the focus and not why he claimed he did it. According to what he stated, he is not exactly apologizing for that extreme behavior, but for reacting to what Koscheck did. Koscheck beat Daley--bottom line.

--Oh, and that attempted knee strike? It may not have landed, but it was thrown.
Daley did attempt to strike Koscheck in the head, using his knee.--

Daley appeared to be using his digits to penetrate Koscheck's eye, during the end of the fight. Where is this competitive? Koscheck seemed obviously perturbed by Daley's actions, and he said what was needed to be said. Daley still lost and knew he lost.
What might have cemented White's decision is when Daley explained to White that he (Daley) did not hear the bell, when the sucker punch was thrown. You come at me with a bullsh*t line like that and I'd probably cut you as well. After Daley had time to think about the event, he was able to be more truthful. Afterall, he did realize it was too late for alibies. He was already cut from the ranks of the UFC.

results: Werdum beat Fedor by submission (triangle choke and arm bar); Cyborg beat Finney for almost two rounds, until the referee stopped the thrashing.  Finney was a game opponent.
Bennett did not fight Noons, instead Noons fought another opponent, and Noons won.

Another very interesting female fighter at 115-135 pounds is Zoila Frausto.  This woman can hit as hard as a man and her kicks are devastating.  Not only that, but she is a very hot looking woman!  In the Gina category.  She boasts a 8-1 record and was OK with her most recent performance,
a Unanimous decision victory over Jessica Pene in the Bellator 25 Tournament.
All female body and looks very sexy in a bikini.
Zoila resides in Madera. California.

Now, did I tell it like it is or what?

Frausto's last fight was August 19, 2010 at Bellator 25 in Chicago, Ill, and defeated Once undefeated, 7-1 Jessica Pene. This is Frausto's new sculpted 115 body.  Hot meter?

Ouch!!
And this girl is a fighter!

Los Angeles, CA--June 28, 2010--Although UFC Heavyweight Champ, Brock Lesnar and Interim Champ Shane Carwin appear to be similar in stature, there is one item some fans have forgotten regarding why Lesnar will beat Carwin and that is his attitude.  Yes, Lesnar has a mean streak in him while Carwin has always been a nice guy.  Good hearted fighters can beat bad ones, but not in all cases.  Sure it's nice to know when you are in the right, during a confrontation, but in cases such as MMA fights, that issue can usually be thrown out the window.

Lesnar has something inside the core which will come to fruition when this bout takes place in 4 days.  Both fighters do hit hard, both are solid wrestlers, but Lesnar has the edge in the wrestling department.  Carwin may have been fortunate enough to have knocked out his past opponents, but he has not come across someone who is by far meaner than he is.  This soon will come to pass, on July 3rd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV.   Unfortunately for Carwin, he'll be fighting someone who will do to him what he's been doing to all his opponents, when he faces Brock Lesnar.

Rich Franklin used to annihilate his opponents, until meeting up with Anderson Silva.  From that point on, it seemed Silva would do to Franklin what Franklin was doing to his opponents.   Some how Silva could do to Franklin what no others were able to do, which brings us to Lesnar/Carwin.  Yes, Lesnar will be the Anderson Silva while Carwin will be the Rich Franklin.  What Carwin has been able to do to all his opponents, Lesnar will be doing to Carwin.  Sometimes, one just has your number.

Give credence to Chris Leben for taking the Yoshihiro Akiyama fight on two weeks notice, especially directly after his own fight, which he won as recently as June 19th, when he defeated Aaron Simpson in the 2nd round.  Originally, Wanderlei Silva (no relation to Anderson Silva) was penned to fight Akiyama, but injuries to Silva's ribs and knee forced the fighter to pull out of the planned bout.  Akiyama was hesitant to fight Leben, but was talked into going on with the bout, since he had
already been in his own training camp.   The best thing to come from this fight will be Leben's pocketbook being filled to the brim.  Just think if he pulls off the unthinkable and beats Akiyama?  There is the bonus money for wins, that are included with the "show".   To just show up in the Octagon, Leben will receive around $35,000--40,000.  If he wins, he'll receive a bonus close to his purse.  If he makes Fight of the Night honors, Submission of the Night or Knock out of the Night, he'll really be shi*ting in high cotton!   --rty

"I came to box, he came to grapple..."  He complained of Henderson's kicking also, yet Varner threw his share of kicks as well.  Varner showed why people boo him; he can't take criticism well, nor can he take defeat well.  At least Cerrone is man enough to congratulate the victor, when he loses.  Henderson is now the WEC Lightweight Title holder.

Hermes Franca retires from MMA.  Three of his last four fights were losses.  He felt it was time to concentrate on family and coaching in his Gym at Syracuse, New York.  (East West Combat Club)

Brock Lesnar might have major surgery and may never fight again.  The recovery time for this particular surgery takes at least 6 months and up to a year.  Lesnar showed too many signs of immaturity.  His attitude was so poor that he should have been seen at skid row meals.

Did you ever watch PRIDE 26 (Bad to the Bone) when Daijyu Takase beat Anderson SilvaThis was a classic match up between Silva and fodder.  Unfortunately for Silva, Takase managed to take him down, and stayed on top of Silva, attempting many moves while keeping ring control and keeping busy enough to keep it on the mat.  Takase eventually submitted Silva with an arm triangle.  You could actually view Silva tapping.
Now this is how you beat Silva.  And to think, this guy was supposed to be an easy match up.  It was a great fight, if you call being one sided great.  I say it was, because it showed Silva's weakness. Takase showed the world how it is done.  Too bad, this fight wasn't viewed enough times, because I do not believe Silva has lost since.  He was manhandled like he usually manhandles everyone else.  It was comical to watch this great pound-for-pound fighter tapping out.  I knew someone would step up to the plate and handle his affairs like he was supposed to.  Unfortunately, it was a Japanese fighter from Silva's past and not in the present day.  At least I was able to view someone exposing his (Silva's) game.  --rty
