CELEBRATING 60 YEARS             OF SHORINJI KEMPO
                  1947--2007
                                                        Doshin So (1911 - 1980)

The founder of SHORINJI KEMPO, Doshin So personally witnessed the harsh realities of WWII and,

out of a deep and abiding concern for the future of man and his mother country, resolved to develop

confidence in young people, giving them the courage and compassion to care about others and serve

society as a whole.

He believed that carefully organized, an educational system providing appropriate teaching were

necessary to develop human potential. So he developed a set of techniques that anyone could learn

regardless of gender or individual physical strengths based on Chinese martial arts and other knowledge

he had mastered. He also took special care to insure that these techniques would be appealing to others

and effective in fostering confidence. He then developed a unique educational system that combined

these techniques and his founding philosophy of “Half for one’s own happiness, and half for the

happiness of others.” He named this system SHORINJI KEMPO.    Some describe it as the 'middle path'.

IN MEMORY OF DOSHIN SO, FOUNDER,
and MY SENSEI, and LOS ANGELES BRANCH MASTER MIHO TANYA YAMAMORI,
LOS ANGELES LOCATION: KONKO (CHURCH)  2924 E. 1st Street L.A., CA 90033

I  was lucky enough to actually meet Doshin So in the late 70's, before he finally passed on.  He made

an appearance at our Los Angeles DOJO, which we trained on hardwood flooring at the little white

church known as 'KONKO' by local residents of Boyle Heights.  I trained under Master Yamamori

for a few years in the late seventies from 77-80.  I sustained an injury from an attempted robbery (I had

gotten stabbed on the left wrist/forearm, losing much needed grip strength).  Unfortunately, I was unable to

continue my training at that time, due to the length of time it took to fully heal (my arm).  Once I was

fully recovered, I resided in the SF Valley, and chose to continue my training under Lynn Kobayashi

in Panorama City, CA.  This Art was not Shorinji Kempo, but I had my Japanese Instructor (I felt

better under Japanese Masters).  After another year, I realized my injury was not ever going to fully heal,

so I no longer trained in my passion: Martial Arts.  How did I end up in Martial Arts?  While living in El

Paso, TX in the 60's, my Dad and oldest brother pulled me aside one day and asked if I would like to

train in Karate.  Needless to say, I was all for it.  I was 11 or 12 at the time. I trained for about a year

until we moved to Northern New Mexico.  The school I attended had wrestling as an Intercollegiate

sport.  I am a pure athlete (have to be in some sport no matter what, whether in season or off season), so I

signed up.    I was a Varsity Wrestler in 9th Grade.  I wrestled 119, 126 & 132 weights.  I loved tacking on

the points, and prefered that over fast tap-outs.  You pin a guy's shoulders for even one second and the ref

can tap him out.  You end up winning the match.    I lost 1 match my whole wrestling career (my very last

match).    Training was intense; always wore a heavy sweat suit, worked out in a fairly small room with no

windows and two huge heaters blasting all the time.  There were times when I had to wrestle each wrestler,

one after the other, just to prepare for future matches.  Wrestling took place during the Winter months, and I

lived about 7 miles from school.  Well, I would attend school, then train 2 hours in wrestling, then walk in

the snow 7 miles just to get home.  Think I'm lying?  Think again.  I never gave it a thought.  I loved the

sport.

After high school I worked in the West Texas oil fields for a couple years, then moved back to California

to continue training in something.  Since the Konko was just around the corner from my Mother's house, and

she had introduced me to the sensei years before, I walked in one evening and told  Yamamori-san I wanted

him to train me.  The rest is history (actually the rest is what I had already written).  Since then, I've kept in

contact with Yamamori until December (2006), when Mr. Yamamori passed away.  This section of the

website is dedicated to the memory of both my sensei,

Yamamori,

and our Founder,

Doshin So.

Brian Stann Honored with Cazadores Spirit Award

Los Angeles, CA -- February 5th, 2010 -- UFC 109 will be held at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on Saturday, February 6th, 2010 and Light Heavyweight Contender Brian Stann was given the Cazadores Authentic Spirit Award during the press conference today. 2nd LT. Stann (eventually promoted to Captain) was awarded the Silver Star in 2006, while serving in the military in Iraq. Stann left the Marine Corps (active duty) in 2008 to pursue a career in MMA. Stann at first fought in the WEC and defeated Doug Marshall for the WEC Light Heavyweight Title. Since that time, Stann was defeated by Steve Cantwell , whom Stann had beaten earlier. Both fighters, Cantwell and Stann have joined the UFC, Stann winning the rubber match and he will be fighting tomorrow, facing Phil Davis, a UFC newcomer.

Stann is such a perfect fit as role model, being nicknamed "the All American". Stann also founded the non profit charity known as: Hire Heroes USA, which he is the Executive Director of. Strikeforce Miami Results

Miami hosted Strikeforce's event on Saturday, January 30th, pitting Robbie Lawler against Melvin Manhoef, in which Lawler allowed Manhoef to put in some effort, before Lawler decided he'd had enough, knocking out Manhoef before the end of the first round.  Lawler's strike was so powerful, Manhoef was out before hitting the mat.  Lawler cracked Manhoef twice more, before the referee was able to stop the bout.  Some may have thought Lawler was in trouble, but it appeared to me that Lawler knew exactly what he was doing.  Some also thought Lawler was losing this fight.  Not the case.  Lawler had his strategy and utilized that.  He was unwilling to attempt any take downs, but knew his striking would suffice.  Ask Melvin.

  (Robbie Lawler)
Marloes Coenen lost her battle with Cristiane Santos, but it took Cyborg three rounds to do it.  This fight was for Cyborg's Lightweight belt, which Cyborg retained and has not immediate plans to relinquish it.  Cyborg was impressive in her title defense.  Coenen is a formidable fighter/contender and had no decent answer for Cyborg's striking.

Cyborg definitely had the edge in strength, as opposed to the Carano fight, where it was obvious Carano had the strength advantage.  Carano needs to have the confidence in her abilities.  Coenen can beat Cyborg, but needs to work on her skills before trying to fight her again.  Her submission skills did not come in to play tonight.
  (Marloes Coenen)
Heavyweight Herschel Walker won his debut in MMA and Strikeforce, by strikes in the third round, beating Greg Nagy who is now 1-2.  Walker seemed to have the stamina to go the distance, and he has not plans for the Heavyweight belt.  Mainly, Walker wanted to delve into MMA because of his competitiveness.  Walker is a Heisman Trophy winner and an ex-NFL runningback.

(Herschel Walker)
Nick  Diaz beat Marius Zaromskis for the vacant Welterweight title, dispatching Z in the first round by strikes.  Diaz' strikes may not look very hard, but with that reach advantage and the constant blows coming, this guy eventually knocks his opponents out.  This was exciting from the initial bell, until the ref stopped the fight, after Z fell to the mat.  Diaz is on his way into the MMA Hall of Fame.

(Nick Diaz)
Cesar Gracie has something there.  He's got three belt holders: Nick Diaz, Jake Shields and Gilbert Melendez.

WHAT ARE THEY DOING NOW?

Los Angeles, CA--March 8th, 2010--ON March 6th, 2010, inside of Nationwide Arena, in Ohio, the WEC held it's World Bantamweight Championship (135) Bowles vs Cruz, Brian Bowles lost his belt when injuring his hand while fighting Dominic Cruz.  Cruz proved very elusive as it was, constantly moving his feet and twisting and turning every which way, all the while scoring points, picking apart his opponent.  After round 2 was over, Bowles' corner called it quits.  The doctor conferred with Bowles' corner and the referee, deciding to call the fight, delcaring Cruz the winner and new WEC Featherweight Champ.

Joseph Benavidez beat Miguel Angel Torres by Guillotine Choke near the 3 minute mark of the 2nd round.  Torres lost his belt to Bowles, when Bowles knocked him out during their Title bout a few months back.  Once the world saw Torres' jaw is made of glass, he'll never be the same fighter he once was.  He used to beam with confidence, thinking he was invincible, leading others to think likewise.  Bowles did not feed into that, so when the two squared off in the cage, Bowles tested Torres' chin, leading to the knock out.
Benavidez never was one to tuck his tail, so when these two met on March the 6th, Benavidez commenced to do his thing.  If you've seen him fight, you'd know how tough a fighter he is.  His only defeat was at the hands of the New WEC Featherweight Champion, Cruz in their most recent outing.

The shocker of the night?  Anthony Pettis knocked out Danny Castillo by head kick in the 1st round.  Many picked Castillo to win, but this writer chose Pettis, because Pettis was going to win.

Jens Pulver lost to Javier Vasquez by submission (arm bar) in the 1st round.  Pulver is 35 years old and Vasquez is 34.  When Vasquez last fought, after the fight, he told the crowd he planned to retire, so he could concentrate on coaching only.  He changed his mind?  It is very possible Pulver will retire, though.  His last 5 fights have all been losses.  Since his last win-streak (6), he's lost 7 out of 8 fights, his only victory being against Cub Swanson, by a very quick choke, only seconds into the fight.  Of course, it doesn't help, fighting the likes of Urijah Faber twice, Leonard Garcia and Vasquez.

WEC 46
VARNER VS HENDERSON

Sacramento, CA--January 11, 2010--Lightweight Interim Champ Benson Henderson beat WEC Lightweight Champ Jamie Varner to solidify the belts, and now Henderson is the undisputed WEC Lightweight Champ, despite what Varner claimed after tapping out.  Varner complained (excuse) that he came to box and Henderson came to grapple, as if what Varner came to do was the manly thing and Henderson didn't play fair.

We see who now holds the belt and who took it from whom.  Varner showed his a*s by talking that trash after he tapped out to Henderson's submission (guillotine).  MMA is not just boxing, nor is it only one discipline, so Varner can go cry to someone who cares.  Varner was booed throughout his stay at Sacramento.  Needless to say, he couldn't handle defeat very honorably, because he chose to trash talk instead of admit his defeat at the hands of Henderson.

Henderson threw many leg and body kicks as well as head kicks, while Varner tried to strike more than Henderson did, although Varner had his kicks as well.  Varner did go for take downs more that Henderson did, but bottom line is Henderson took the belt from Varner and yes, Varner did tap out (the Tap Out crew was present).  Also present during the fightes were
Chuck Liddell, Donald Cerrone,Brian Bowles and Dominic Cruz.

In the co-main event,
Urijah Faber choked out Rafael Assuncao in the second round of a three rounder.  Assuncao and Faber fought two hard, active rounds, until Faber managed to take Assuncao's back before submitting him.  This was probably fight of the night.  Faber is back, on his way toward that belt once again.

Mike Brown beat Anthony Morrison by submission (rear naked choke) over Morrison in the first round.  It appeared Brown did all the work.  Perhaps Morrison was somewhat intimidated.

Varner and Henderson

                                                WEC Featherweight Champion, Jose Aldo

Aldo beat Brown by strikes in the 2nd round, taking complete ownership of the Featherweight belt.

UFC 110 Nogueira vs Velasquez

Cain Velasquez made quick work of Minotauro Nogueira, knocking him out in the first round at ACER Arena in Sydney, Australia on February 20th, 2010.

In a rather controversial decision, Wanderlei Silva got the nod over Michael Bisping.  Bisping was knocked down at the end of the third round, possibly sealing the decision for Silva.  Silva poured it on at the end of each round, in his attempt to steal each round. (must have worked).

                                        (Michael Bisping)

Ryan Bader knocked out Keith Jardine in the third round of this contest of light heavyweights.  Bader had the first round, but as usual, he had a difficult time in the second round (fatigue).  Fortunately for Bader, he got the knock out.

CB Dollaway surprised many fans with his MMA skills, in defeating Goran Reljic in three rounds, by unanimous decision.

Perhaps the show of the night was Stephan Bonner fighting Krzysztof Soszynski.  The fight was stopped by accidental headbutt, although the referee saw it as a strike, and not a headbutt, like Joe Rogan claimed.  Of course, the referee is inches away from the fighters, while Rogan depends on his monitor for footage. The ironic thing about this fight is Bonner was left with a gash shaped like a letter "K" on his forehead (K as in Krzysztof) and a loss on his record.  He has since petitioned for a change in the ruling from win/loss to a Technical Draw.

Dan Henderson to face Jake Shields for the Strikeforce Middleweight Belt

On April 17th, 2010, at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, Dan Henderson (Formerly of Pride and UFC), will have his opportunity to fight current Strikeforce Middleweight Champion, Jake Shields, for Shields' belt. Henderson has held titles in both PRIDE and the UFC.  Shields has had success in fighting larger opponents.

Also on the line is the Light Heavyweight Belt, currently held by Gegard Mousasi, and challenger King Mo Lawal will be a formidable opponent.  Probably the most formidable one yet.

Gilbert Melendez puts his Lightweight belt on the line against Japan's DREAM Champion, Shinya Aoki.  The Strikeforce event will air live on CBS Television Network.

APRIL 24th WEC Title fights

On April 24th, 2010, at the ARCO Arena, Jose Aldo defends his belt against former WEC Featherweight champ, Urijah Faber.

Also on the card are current WEC Lightweight Champ, Ben Henderson defending his title against Donald Cerrone in a rematch from their Interim title fight.  One advantage Cerrone has over Henderson is Cerrone doesn't mind fighting 5 rounds, whereas Henderson hates it.  In their first fight, Henderson was gassed in the later rounds.  Both have shown they can go five rounds, but Henderson hates to do it again.

In yet another Featherweight battle is Mike Brown trying to get back to the championship rounds, but first he must get past Manny Gamburyan.

In the Lightweight fights, Anthony Njokuani will face off against Shane Roller. Njokuani's last fight was when he chased down former child phenom, Chris Horodecki and kicked his head from behind, causing Horodecki to change his ideas on fairness and good sportsmanship in the cage.  Needless to say, Horodecki went down and Njokuani commenced to pounce on him, until the referee stopped the fight.

In the Bantamweights, Damacio Page will face off against Antonio Banuelos.

This will be the very first time the WEC will be broadcast on PPV, instead of free television (Versus).  It's possible the PPV event will not fare so well, because of past events being telecast on the Versus channel, and not Pay Per View.

(Chopper World)

Another very interesting female fighter at 135 pounds is Zoila Frausto.  This woman can hit as hard as a man and her kicks are devastating.  Not only that, but she is a very hot looking woman!  In the Gina category.  She boasts a 5-0 record and was apparently dismayed by her most recent performance.  She needs to work a little more on her striking defense, but other than that, she is fairly well rounded.  Short, but stocky.  All female body and looks very sexy in a bikini.
Zoila resides in Madera. California.

Now, did I tell it like it is or what?

Zoila will be fighting next on March 26, at Strikeforce Challengers VII.  Her opponent will be Miesha Tate (8-2)
Since losing to Sarah Kaufman in May, Tate was upset by comments appearing on Frausto's MySpace page following her debut in Strikeforce, when she beat Elisha Helsper in November 2009. Tate claimed she didn't appreciate the comments very much.
She also stated:
"I think she's just a little too cocky, I think it would be a good fight." (regarding a fight with Frausto)

Tate defeated Valerie Coolbaugh earlier this month.

Strikeforce Challengers VII is set take place at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, CA and will be televised on Showtime

MAIN CARD
LAVAR JOHNSON VS LOLOHEA MAHE
ABONGO HUMPHREY VS GEORGE BUSH III
LUKE STEWART VS ANDRE GALVAO
ZOILA FRAUSTO VS MIESHA TATE
JUSTIN WILCOX VS BRYAN TRAVERS

NEWS BRIEF (WHAT'S IN MY BRIEFS?  ANS: BOXERS)...

COMMENTARY:
Rashad Evans beat Thiago Silva  by unanimous decision at UFC 108
Evans is about to face his nemesis, Rampage Jackson, since Jackson returned to the Octagon.  Watch the A-Team (the remake) in Theaters soon.

WEC 46
Varner complained (excuses) about Henderson's strategy, noting that is how Henderson won.
"I came to box, he came to grapple..."  He complained of Henderson's kicking also, yet Varner threw his share of kicks as well.  Varner showed why people boo him; he can't take criticism well, nor can he take defeat well.  At least Cerrone is man enough to congratulate the victor, when he loses.  Henderson is now the WEC Lightweight Title holder.

Hermes Franca retires from MMA.  Three of his last four fights were losses.  He felt it was time to concentrate on family and coaching in his Gym at Syracuse, New York.  (East West Combat Club)

Brock Lesnar might have major surgery and may never fight again.  The recovery time for this particular surgery takes at least 6 months and up to a year.  Lesnar showed too many signs of immaturity.  His attitude was so poor that he should have been seen at skid row meals.

Dan Henderson signs with Strikeforce in December 2009

Did you ever watch PRIDE 26 (Bad to the Bone) when Daijyu Takase beat Anderson SilvaThis was a classic match up between Silva and fodder.  Unfortunately for Silva, Takase managed to take him down, and stayed on top of Silva, attempting many moves while keeping ring control and keeping busy enough to keep it on the mat.  Takase eventually submitted Silva with an arm triangle.  You could actually view Silva tapping.
Now this is how you beat Silva.  And to think, this guy was supposed to be an easy match up.  It was a great fight, if you call being one sided great.  I say it was, because it showed Silva's weakness. Takase showed the world how it is done.  Too bad, this fight wasn't viewed enough times, because I do not believe Silva has lost since.  He was manhandled like he usually manhandles everyone else.  It was comical to watch this great pound-for-pound fighter tapping out.  I knew someone would step up to the plate and handle his affairs like he was supposed to.  Unfortunately, it was a Japanese fighter from Silva's past and not in the present day.  At least I was able to view someone exposing his (Silva's) game.  --rty
