                                                       Ever hear of Angelman's syndrome?

It is not very well known, but it strikes many youth.  Imagine missing a chromosome that prevents you from speaking

or walking?  Angelman's Syndrome does this.  In fact, some characteristics are drooling, love of water.  David Herrera Jr

has Angelman's Syndrome and he loves being in the tub.  He splashes around for hours.  It is the only way he can use

all his muscles voluntarily.  He cannot speak, so when he has a headache, he cannot tell us about it.  The problem with

this is those headaches are signs of an upcoming seizure.

He doesn't know how to talk, but he needs to learn to communicate somehow.  We are in the stages of learning sign

language, in hopes of learning how to communicate without voice.  He can grab our hand or arm when he wants some-

thing we are holding, and pull it toward him.  He knows how to communicate this way, so we are hoping sign would be

an easier method of communication between us.  He cannot use the restroom on his own, so he has to wear diapers.

The motor skills are not present, so things go very slow.  His school has a specially equipped bike that David needs to

use.  The problem is there is only one of those bikes between many children.  David needs his own bike, just like most

of the children do.  The dilemma is the cost of the bike; $3,000 without insurance.  The positive note here is we are

asking for help.  We are requesting that you look into this particular case and consider donating for this worthy cause.

Happy News: The quota has been met and little David Jr now has his bike!  We wish to thank everyone who donated and contributed for this worthy cause.

He is given rides on the bike often.  Since he doesn't actually drive this tricycle on his own, his father must do the navigating himself, while David Jr is safely harnessed

to the seat.   Yes, unfortunately, David Jr. must use a seat/safety harness/belt to keep from falling off, but this is normal routine for any child with Angelman's Syndrome.

Once again, thank you for assisting his family in the procurement of this expensive, specially equipped tricycle, made especially for special needs children.

ALSO: David Jr has been walking lately.  It may only be 5-6 steps at a time, but at least he has learned to do this much.

Do the research and see how devastating Angelman's Syndrome is and what it takes to treat.  Then, if you would like

to help, please contact us via Email, and we will pass the information to the child's parent, David Sr.  The only other

help he gets is from his Grandmother.  Between the two of them, taking care of David Jr is more than just babysitting.

He has to be watched constantly.  He does know how to crawl.  He will go directly to the nearest water, but as long

as he gets special attention, as he does receive, he'll stay safe.  This is a lot of hard work, he is already 8 years old and

his weight is normal for a child his age.  With continued care and therapy, we are hoping he will eventually learn to walk, if he needs to use braces,

then so be it.  We are also hoping to teach him to use his hands and arms with more coordination, so he will be able to

do more things by himself.  This is not a happy story, but at least he has his Father who has not abandoned him.  His

father is a single parent and doing everything he can for David Jr.  Please consider donating to this worthy cause.  There

is a special account set up in David Herrera Jr's name.  Thank you

There are less than 5,000 cases in the US today.  Colin Farrell, the Irish Actor, has a son, James, who also has Angelman's Syndrome.

RE: David Jr./Angelman's Syndrome

Jr loves the water--the photo of the bike is what they look like--that's David Jr. on the school's bike--all photos are recent (2007).

David's bike (trike) is blue.  It is greatly appreciated that we received enough contributions and donations that David was

able to get his bike.  Once again, thank you, everyone who helped out and those of you who continue to help.   --rty

DID YOU KNOW...?

...Hens with white feathers lay white eggs, while hens with red feathers lay the brown ones.

                                            (the History Channel)

...St. Patrick's Day:  Did you know St. Patrick was born in Britain?  Did you know

he was also imprisoned for six years before making his escape?  Did you know

the Irish have celebrated this Holiday for thousands of years?   Many said St.

Patrick came to England and banished all snakes from Ireland.  The fact is,

Ireland never did have snakes.  The banishing of the snakes was really a metaphor

for the eradication of pagan ideology from Ireland and the triumph of Christianity.

(this information came by researching the History.com website)

EVER WONDER...?

a.m. and p.m.; from where do they come and why are they used today?

These abbreviations represent the Latin phrase ante/post meridiem, which mean 'before/after midday'.
They have been in use in English since the 17th century. There is no need to change these two terms
and probably won't be for quite some time.  As long as we have this language and as long as the Earth
rotates the way she has been, these two time references will last our life time.  --rty

WORDS FOR THE WEEK ARE...?

to be determined...

  • Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

  • What is the Capitol of California?     ans: "C", right?

  • When you go into court, you are putting yourself into the hands of 12 people who weren't smart enough to get out of jury duty

  • Had an emergency the other day; needed to call 911, but couldn't find the '11' button.

  • A vulture boards an airplane, carrying two dead raccoons. The flight attendant looks at him and says,

'I'm sorry, sir, only one carrion allowed per passenger.'

  • Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the other and says 'Dam!'

  • Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. Unsurprisingly, it immediately sank,

proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it too.
